Apple replaces pistol emoji with plastic water gun icon

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — Apple announced Monday they would be replacing their pistol emoji with a green, water gun emoji this fall when they release the iOS 10 software update.

According to CNN Money, this isn’t the first decision they’ve had to make regarding weapon icons. Earlier this year, they rejected a proposed rifle emoji.

CNN Money also reports that the pistol emoji has gotten several people in trouble with the law.

In Virginia, a 12-year-old  was charged after allegedly threatening her school in an Instagram post that used a gun, knife and bomb emoji.

A teen in Brooklyn was arrested for posting a police emoji with pistol emojis pointing at his head. The charges were later dropped.

"Apple has stood up to the bullying tactics of the NRA and gun industry by showing that there are many more life-affirming ways to express oneself than with a gun," said Leah Barrett, NYAGV’s Executive Director on Monday.

Other changes coming with the iOS 10 update include female emojis doing jobs usually associated with males: detective, construction worker, and police officer. There are new female athletes, a pride flag, and family options for single parents.
