Arrests made after homicide near Downtown
SAN DIEGO (CNS) – Two men were in custody Wednesday on suspicion of murder in connection with a shooting in Park West that left one man dead and another wounded, police said.
Ruben Acosta, 40, and Rodney Acosta, 18, were arrested in a traffic stop in El Cajon Tuesday afternoon shortly after the shooting occurred inside an apartment in the 100 block of West Fir Street, according to San Diego police Lt. Kevin Rooney.
Officers responding to the shooting shortly after 3 p.m. found two men wounded in the Park West apartment, the homicide lieutenant said in a statement. Medics took both wounded men to area trauma centers.
One of the wounded men, identified as Luis Espinoza, 27, died at 7:35 p.m., according to Rooney. The other, whose name was withheld, remained hospitalized early today and was expected to survive, he said.
While at the apartment, investigating officers developed a description of three suspects and a getaway vehicle. The descriptions was broadcast to local law enforcement. A California Highway Patrol officer spotted the vehicle in the El Cajon area and initiated a traffic stop, Rooney said.
The Acostas were in the vehicle and taken into custody without further incident, he said, adding that a third suspect remained at large. The nature of the Acostas' relationship, if any, was not immediately clear.
Both Ruben and Rodney Acosta were booked into county jail on suspicion of murder.
The motive was under investigation.
