Arson suspect in custody after at least 18 fires
SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Eighteen arson fires in less than 72 hours came from deliberately-set fires near the Otay River.
Firefighters say at least 10 fires were started by an arson suspect this morning alone and continue to burn.
Over the last two days, firefighters battled an additional eight arson fires not far from a homeless encampment along the 200 block of Beyer Way.
Police say they have a suspect in custody in connection with the 18 arson fires, which were sometimes in danger of setting alight nearby structures.
“[Police] say they dohave a suspect, and we’re hoping that’ll be the end of this,” says Deputy Chief Kelly Zombro of San Diego Fire Rescue.
Police have identified 49-year-old Ramon Rivera.
