Attempted murder-suicide in Carlsbad leaves one dead, one wounded

CARLSBAD (CNS) – An apparent attempted murder-suicide left a man dead
and a woman wounded Monday at a retirement apartment complex in a coastal North
County neighborhood.

Shots rang out shortly before 12:30 p.m. in the 3500 block of Harding
Street in Carlsbad, near Palm Avenue and just west of Interstate 5, according
to police.

A man believed to be about 80 years old died at the scene. Medics
airlifted a woman in her mid-60s to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. Her
condition was not immediately available.

Preliminary evidence suggested that one of the two shot the other before
attempting suicide, Lt. Jeff Chapman said. Both lived at the complex near
Pine Park, though it was unclear if they resided together.

Their names were not immediately available.
