Authorities ID body run over in Fallbrook: Cause of death remains unclear
FALLBROOK (CNS) – A boy who was run over by a car while lying in a Fallbrook roadway was identified Wednesday, but it remained unclear if the victim was dead prior to being struck.
Seventeen-year-old Alfonso Martinez of Fallbrook was lying in the roadway on East Fallbrook Street between Potter Street and Shady Glen Drive for unknown reasons when he was struck by a black Honda Civic shortly before 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to the California Highway Patrol and the county Medical Examiner’s Office.
The driver pulled over and called for help and likely will not be cited or face charges, CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt said.
CHP officials said it was unclear if another vehicle had struck the victim earlier and left the scene, and the Medical Examiner’s Office listed the time Martinez sustained the injuries or ailment that led to his death as unknown.
Bettencourt said the Medical Examiner’s Office would determine how many cars had struck the victim and whether alcohol or drugs played a part in his death.
An autopsy has yet to scheduled, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office.
