Authorities identify man fatally shot in National City last week

NATIONAL CITY (KUSI) — Authorities Thursday publicly identified a 26-year-old man fatally shot last week in a neighborhood in the northern reaches of National City.

Patrol officers responding to reports of gunfire near Highland Avenue and Interstate 805 found Onan Loaiza of National City mortally wounded in the 800 block of Eta Street about 11 a.m. on March 27.

Homicide detectives believe the slaying may have stemmed from a dispute at a market in the 1700 block of South 43rd Street in the Shelltown area of San Diego, a few blocks north of where the victim was found, Lt. Greg Seward said. The nature of the altercation was unclear.

Witnesses told investigators the shooter fled to the south in a vehicle that possibly was being driven by an accomplice.

Later that day, detectives arrested Robert Alan Garduno, 27, in connection with the fatal shooting. He was arraigned this week on charges of first-degree murder and assault.
