Aztecs Leave for Mountain West Tournament
The San Diego State Aztecs men’s basketball team left for Vegas Wednesday afternoon to play as the top seed in the Mountain West Tournament. After winning the regular season title many figure they must win the tournament in Sin City in order to receive a bid to play in March Madness.
"We are just ready to go out there and get things on a roll. One game at a time. We got to take care of tomorrow," says senior Winston Shepard.
The Aztecs will face Utah State Thursday, a team they beat twice this season.
"I remember that they spread the floor really well," says sophomore Malik Pope about the Aggies.
The last time the Aztecs won the Mountain West Tournament was back in 2011 with rising star Kawhi Leonard. They have lost in the final game the past two seasons.
"We’ve focused on everything that we have been struggling on and we’re just trying to capitalize on that and improve our game so that we can win this conference tournament," stated Pope before boarding the bus.
The Aztecs hold the 8th longest streak for consecutive appearances in the NCAA tournament with six. The next three games could determine whether that streak stays intact.
"We want to play again. We want to go for the 7th straight time," says head coach Steve Fisher.
