Battle for the 49th: Diane Harkey (R) vs. Mike Levin (D)

For the first time since 2001, the 49th Congressional District will have a new representative. For the past 18 years, Darrell Issa has represented that district. In January, Issa announced that he would not seek reelection.

Last month, President Trump nominated Issa to be the Director of the United States Trade and Development Agency.

The 49th District covers most of the Northern coastal areas of San Diego County, including Encinitas, Carlsbad, Vista, and Camp Pendleton. It also covers a small part of Southern Orange County, including San Clemente.

Both candidates campaigning to replace Issa joined KUSI’s Lauren Phinney for a roundtable discussion.

Republican candidate, Diane Harkey, is a member of the California State Assembly. Prior to that, she served as Mayor of Dana Point in Orange County.

Democrat candidate Mike Levin is an environmental activist, who served for several years on the board of the center for sustainable energy. He is a co-founder of Sustain OC in Orange County. Levin was also the Director of the Democrat Party of Orange County. He hosted several fundraisers for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign.
