Bicyclist killed in freak accident on Hwy 56

RANCHO PENASQUITOS (CNS) – A bicyclist was killed and at least one other person was injured Tuesday night when a sport utility vehicle crashed off state Route 56 in Rancho Penasquitos and tumbled onto a bike path alongside the freeway, authorities reported.

The fatal accident just west of Black Mountain Road was reported shortly before 6:30 p.m. Tuesday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The bicyclist died at the scene. Medics took at least one other person to a trauma center for treatment of serious injuries.

It was not immediately clear why the eastbound sport utility vehicle careened off the freeway, after which it went over an embankment and a chain- link fence, hit several bicyclists and came to rest upside-down on the pedestrian/bike trail.
