Bishop Flores laid to rest

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – Cirilo Flores, the bishop of the Catholic diocese of San Diego was laid to rest Wednesday.

Around 400 priests and 50 bishops were among the well over 1,000 mourners gathered for a funeral Mass at Saint Therese of Carmel, according to the church. Flores, who died Sept. 6 at age 65, was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Flores became San Diego’s fifth bishop about one year ago, replacing Robert Brom, but suffered a stroke in his office in April, then was diagnosed with cancer. He was replaced on an interim basis as administrator of the diocese by Steven Callahan.

Callahan, a native of Aurora, Colorado, was ordained as a priest in 1987 and currently serves as the vicar general of the diocese. He is also the pastor at Saint Brigid parish in Pacific Beach.

The diocese requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Bishop Flores Memorial Fund for Catholic Education, Diocese of San Diego, P.O. Box 85728, San Diego, California, 92186, or to Catholic Charities, Diocese of San Diego, 349 Cedar St., San Diego, 92101.
