Body and wrecked truck found on cliff on Palomar Mountain

PALOMAR MOUNTAIN (CNS) – Authorities were working Saturday to identify a man whose body and wrecked pickup truck were found about 400 feet down a cliff on Palomar Mountain, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A Moreno Valley man spotted the wreckage at the base of the view point of South Grade Road about 4:10 p.m. Friday, then climbed down the steep embankment where he found the man's body, CHP Public Information Officer Chris Parent said.

Parent said the gray 1988 Chevy S10 pickup's license plate was linked to a missing person report filed with the Oceanside Police Department on May 30, however identity of the apparent driver has yet to be confirmed.

Evidence at the scene indicated the driver was headed downhill on South Grade Road and lost control on a left turn in the roadway, Parent said. The truck then veered onto the shoulder, down the embankment and overturned, ejecting the driver, according to Parent.

Parent said the crash remained under investigation.
