Body found floating by Oceanside Pier

OCEANSIDE (KUSI) – A body suspected of being that of a young man who fell off Oceanside Pier last month while taking a selfie was found floating in the surf today not far from where the accident occurred.

Lifeguards spotted the corpse drifting near the landmark wooded jetty about 12:30 p.m., Oceanside police spokesman Tom Bussey said.

The body roughly matches the description of 20-year-old Paul Ventura of Escondido, who plunged off the pier about 3:30 a.m. May 25 while sitting on a railing, taking a photo of himself, according to Bussey.

Ventura was able to cling to a pylon in the water for a time but slipped under the surface of the waves as a police rescue swimmer approached. The victim was presumed dead after hours of searching turned up no sign of him.

The county Medical Examiner’s Office was called in to take custody of the body for identification and autopsy purposes.
