Bonita Vista High School student has tuberculosis

CHULA VISTA (CNS) – A student at Bonita Vista High School has tested
positive for tuberculosis and might have infected other pupils and staff, the
San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced Monday.

The possible exposure to others might have been between June 1 and Sept.
9, according to the HHSA.

County health officials have been working with the Sweetwater Union High
School District to notify people who might have come in contact with the sick
person.

“TB can be treated and cured with medication and that's why it's so
important to identify those who have been exposed,” said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the
county's public health officer.

Free on-campus testing will be offered Tuesday for students, faculty and
staff.

Wooten said symptoms of active TB include persistent cough, fever, night
sweats and unexplained weight loss. Most people who are exposed to TB do not
develop the disease, she said.
