Boys and Girls Club of Greater San Diego hosts annual Summer Games

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – It may not have had all of the pomp and circumstance of an Olympics opening ceremony, but don’t tell that to the over 600 kids who were carrying banners and representing their individual Boys and Girls Clubs,  while the music and team announcements blared.

Every summer for the last 22 summers, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego put on an Olympics-styled day-long event. This year’s competition was at the Boys and Girls Club in 4S Ranch.  Clubs from all over the County were represented,  including a team from Borrego Springs.  It’s a day of of fun, team-building and friendship.  Some of the kids told us they look forward to seeing children they competed against in previous years.

But everyone, including the counselors and the volunteers, stressed the importance of learning sportsmanship.
Michelle Malin is Vice President for Development for the Boys and Girls Club.  “The whole idea here is sportsmanship,” she told me.  “That’s the most prestigious trophy at the end of the day.  It gets passed around.  We want the kids to be competitive, but we want them to have a good time.”
