Steele Canyon Cougars 14, Brawley Wildcats 13


Steele Canyon made a great comeback and sealed their first win of the season against visiting Brawley, 14-13, on Friday night.

The game opened with Brawley receiving the kickoff and making their way to the 5-yard line when quarterback Casey Kline rushed in for the touchdown. The Wildcats missed the extra point leaving the score at 6-0.

During the rest of the first half, the Cougars were couldn’t seem to keep possession. The first half closed with the score remaining 6-0.

When the second half started, something clicked for Steele Canyon when they eventually made their way to the 5-yard line. However, they got pushed back quite a bit and Jonathan Gonzalez of the Wildcats intercepted a pass giving the ball back to Brawley.

The Wildcats made it to the 9-yard line and running back Michael Moreno rushed in for the 9-yard touchdown making the score 13-0.

When the fourth quarter began, the Cougars started playing a fourth-quarter game.

Senior quarterback Nathan Barnett would put Steele Canyon on the scoreboard with a 40-yard rushing touchdown.

When it came down to the final seconds of the game, Barnett would force his way into the end zone making the score 14-13 and sealing the win for Steele Canyon.


Week 2 of the PPR is upon us and one game that is sure to be an interesting match is Brawley at Steele Canyon.

This year, Steele Canyon started the 2018 season with an unfortunate loss to Carlsbad with a final score of 41-13.

However, quarterback, Nathan Barnett achieved roughly up to 100 rushing yards along with a touchdown and Wesley Neely managed to return a kick-off for a 95-yard touchdown. Steele Canyon is currently ranked ninth in Division 1.

As for Brawley, the Wildcats opened with a win against Gila Ridge with a final score of 27-20 and are currently ranked seventh in Division 3. This week they’re making quite a hike to face the Cougars. The last time these two teams faced one another Steele Canyon sealed the win with a final score of 24-20 in the Imperial Valley last year.
