Breaking Away Award of Excellence: Mountain Shadows

This week’s Breaking Away Award of Excellence goes to an organization bringing a life of fulfillment to those with developmental disabilities.

"I would not be standing here talking to you if it weren’t for Mountain Shadows," said Portia Bibb, a frequenter of Mountain Shadows.

Bibb’s son has been coming to Mountain Shadows for 30 years, living here during the week, allowing Portia and her husband to work.

"Words cannot express – it’s not possible to articulate the gratitude that this family at mountain shadows has provided for our boy as a home away from home," she said.

Portia’s story is like so many of the families with loved ones at Mountain Shadows.

It’s been a nonprofit in North County since 2002, serving over 250 people with developmental disabilities and employing over 400 people.

The programs provide all levels of care from residential living and day programs with music and art, to transportation services, even Autism and child care services.

Executive Director Wade Wilde says every day is rewarding.

"You think you’re having a bad day and you come to work and you interact with the people we take care of and some of the troubles they have and you start not having a bad day," Wilde said.

And the residents here not only have valuable interaction with others, but also learn like skills. Some even have jobs.

"To see everyone so excited about their paychecks … about working having a purpose in life it really makes a difference. I’ve had some of them hit me up for raises," Wilde said.

The love and care from volunteers, donors and workers to a special group who needs it most illustrates why Mountain Shadows is so deserving of the Breaking Away Award of Excellence.

"Being recognized for working hard and for making a difference in lives that is especially touching," Wilde said.

Lives like Portia and her family.

"We don’t worry. We’re not stressed, we’re not concerned because being a part of Mountain Shadows ourselves all these years we know how wonderfully the staff are taking care of him," Portia said.
