SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – The spread of a brush fire was stopped today near San Diego State University, after students from an apartment complex near SDSU were briefly evacuated, firefighting and SDSU officials said.

“The spread of this fire has been stopped,” the San Diego Fire- Rescue Department said at about 2 p.m. “About 2 1/2 acres of brush burned. No damage to any structures and no injuries. Great work by all the firefighters working this incident.”

The fire was reported about 12:20 p.m. off Canyon Crest Drive near the university’s Viejas Arena.

Caltrans San Diego reported that the eastbound I-8 off-ramp to College Avenue was closed. The San Diego Police department advised drivers to avoid College Avenue and Alvarado Road.

Interstate 8 traffic in both directions through Mission Valley slowed considerably because of the fire, the California Highway Patrol said.
