Cal Fire experiencing shortage of firefighting pilots

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — Cal Fire is having to periodically ground some of its firefighting aircraft because of a pilot shortage.

Some of the reasons for the shortage include the strains on pilots fighting massive fires in Northern California this summer. Those pilots obviously need days off to keep them sharp.

Another reason is other aviation companies poaching the Cal Fire pilots away….pilots who are highly skilled in making retardant/water drops while flying through smoke and flames in mountainous terrain…not to mention having to watch out for power lines and other aircraft.

Cal Fire assures the public it will be able respond and deal with any fires that break out in spite of this situation.
