California Department of Education honors performing schools in low-income areas in SD

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – The California Department of Education Wednesday honored 21 San Diego County schools with Title I achievement awards, recognizing high performing schools in low-income areas.

Federal Title I funding goes to schools with students living at or below the poverty line.

To receive the award, the schools' students must make significant progress toward proficiency on California's academic standards and show they have doubled the achievement targets set for them for two consecutive years.

The schools awarded are:
      — Otay, Palomar and Silver Wing elementary schools, and the Chula Vista
Learning Center Charter in the Chula Vista Elementary School District;
      — North Terrace Elementary School in the Oceanside Unified School
District;
      — Angier, Barnard, Boone, Chesterton, Florence, Jones, Ocean Beach,
Pacific Beach, Sequoia, Vista Grande and Wegeforth elementary schools, Kearny
Digital Media & Design, King/Chavez Primary Academy and San Diego International
Studies schools in the San Diego Unified School District;
      — Richland Elementary School in the San Marcos Unified School District;
and
      — Pepper Drive Elementary School in the Santee Elementary School District.

“These schools have demonstrated exceptional commitment to the education of their students and have achieved impressive results,” said Tom Torlakson, state superintendent of public instruction. “I congratulate all those who put forth the extra effort that resulted in this prestigious award — school administrators and staffs, teachers, parents, and, of course, the students themselves.”

The CDE gave out 209 awards to schools statewide. Honorees will attend a banquet in May.
