Capitol flags flown at half-staff for fallen Navy commander from Oceanside
OCEANSIDE (CNS) – Flags at the state Capitol were flown at half-staff Monday in the memory of a 49-year-old Navy commander from Oceanside who died in Qatar.
Cmdr. Christopher E. Kalafut died Friday at Al Udeid Air Base in Doha, Qatar, in a non-combat role, military officials said. How Kalafut died was not made available.
Kalafut, also a pilot for Delta Airlines, was assigned to Naval Amphibious Liaison Element, Combined Forces Air Component Center, U.S. Central Command, according to the Department of Defense. Details regarding his death were withheld.
In a statement, Gov. Jerry Brown and his wife, Anne Gust Brown, expressed their deepest condolences on behalf of all Californians to Kalafut’s family and friends. His family will receive a letter of condolence from the governor.
