Car catches on fire after crash in El Cajon, killing one

EL CAJON (KUSI) — At least one person was killed when a vehicle went off a road east of El Cajon, landed in a backyard and caught fire, authorities said Monday.

The accident was reported at 8:41 p.m. Sunday on La Cresta Boulevard at Mountain View Road, according to the California Highway Patrol. The vehicle overturned and caught fire, which spread to surrounding brush. 

Firefighters were able to quickly knock down the fire. The small compact vehicle was half its size after the fire, an officer at the scene reported. 

The roadway was closed to accommodate emergency equipment and the investigation, the CHP said.

The driver has not been identified and the cause of the crash remains unknown.
