Car chase leads to an on-foot chase along the San Diego River bed

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Dec 3rd, 2018 at approximately 12 PM, a CHP unit initiated an enforcement stop on a Kia Soul for speeding.

The Kia failed to yield and a pursuit was initiated. The Kia exited the freeway on Texas St. and traversed through several surface streets throughout Mission Center. The driver abandoned the Kia on Camino del Este, north of Camino de la Reina, and fled on foot into the San Diego River bed. The Kia’s VIN was subsequently run and returned stolen.

The driver, a 22 year old Hispanic male, was located in thick brush along the river bed and taken into custody with the assistance of a San Diego Police air unit and K9 unit, for felony grand theft auto and DUI. The driver suffered a bite from the San Diego Police K9 while attempting to apprehend him. The driver was transported to Alvarado Hospital for medical treatment prior to being booked into San Diego County Jail.

The unidentified passenger, a Hispanic male in his mid 20’s, could not be located and remains outstanding.

This incident remains under investigation by San Diego CHP.
