Car fire sparks blaze in La Mesa

A car fire in the southbound lanes of state Route 125
north of state Route 94 spread to a nearby hillside on Sunday, which prompted
authorities to briefly evacuate homes in the area, fire officials said.

The California Highway Patrol received reports of a car on fire on the
highway south of Spring Street shortly before 2 p.m. A SigAlert was temporarily
in effect for two southbound lanes in the area.

The fire spread to a nearby hillside and burned close to homes before it
was contained, authorities said.

Residents on Garfield Street near state Route 125 and north of state
Route 94 were initially asked to evacuate, but Heartland Fire & Rescue
Department officials said about 3:45 p.m. that evacuations were no longer
needed.

The SigAlert was lifted and all roadways were reported clear by early
evening, according to the CHP and La Mesa police.

Fire crews were expected to remain on scene into the evening mopping up
and watching for hot spots, according to the Heartland Fire & Rescue
Department.
