SUV plunges down embankment, smashes into car on I-805

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – An SUV veered off a street in Normal Heights and
plunged down a sheer embankment onto Interstate 805, where it landed on a car
driven by an FBI agent, seriously injuring both motorists.

The driver of the eastbound Jeep Cherokee failed to make a turn on Adams
Avenue about 9:30 a.m., sending it down the roughly 75-foot embankment
alongside the freeway, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

The tumbling SUV hit a southbound sedan before coming to rest upside
down in a traffic lane, SDFRD spokesman Lee Swanson said.

The FBI agent was able to get out of his crumpled car without
assistance, but firefighters had to cut the Jeep apart to extricate the woman
driving that vehicle, Swanson said. Medics took both to Scripps Mercy Hospital.

The wreck forced the closure of the far right-hand southbound lane of
the interstate in the area along with its exit onto Adams Avenue, according to
the California Highway Patrol.
