Car slams into tree in Carlsbad leaving two injured

CARLSBAD (KUSI) — A suspected drunk driving accident in Carlsbad left a driver and a passenger severely injured early Thursday.

The car veered off a curve in eastbound Carlsbad Village Drive as it approached El Camino Real and slammed into a tree around 2:45 a.m. Tuesday, according to a statement from the Carlsbad Police Department.

The passenger was able to crawl out of the wreckage but the driver had to be extricated by the fire department. Both were taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla to be treated for their injuries, police said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation but police said they believe alcohol may have been a factor.
