Car veers off I-15 into Escondido mall parking lot

ESCONDIDO (KUSI) — Two people were in the hospital Wednesday morning after a sedan drove off a freeway in Escondido and into a mall parking lot.

The 21-year-old driver from Vista, Carley M. Coyne was suspected of being under the influence, according to California Highway Patrol, when her 2005 SAAB veered off northbound Interstate 15 and crashed through a chain link fence onto Via Rancho Parkway just before 3 a.m. Wednesday. The sedan flipped and struck two eucalyptus trees before coming to a halt in the parking lot of Westfield North County Fair mall near BJ’s Restaurant, California Highway Patrol officer Jim Bettencourt said.

The 25-year-old male passenger was trapped inside the vehicle, falling in and out of consciousness, and had to be extricated, Bettencourt said. He was transported to Palomar Hospital with major injuries. The driver suffered moderate injuries and was transferred to Palomar Hospital.

The driver is expected to be booked into Vista Detention Facility on suspicion felony driving under the influence of alcohol.

Caltrans maintenance crews were called in to repair damaged caused by the accident.

"Caltrans’ highest concern is highway safety for communities and motorists we serve.  It’s important to remember that highway safety is everyone’s responsibility–it cannot be maintained when people drive impaired, distracted or at excessive speeds."
