Cardiff-by-the-Sea motorcyclist in ICU after being struck by car

ENCINITAS (CNS) – A motorcycle struck a car that pulled away from a curb and into its path in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, and the resulting crash left the rider in intensive care with broken ribs and other injuries, sheriff’s officials said.

The 37-year-old rider of a 2002 Suzuki GSX 1300 motorcycle was headed south on South Coast Highway 101 near Verdi Avenue at about 15 miles per hour under the speed limit just prior to the crash shortly before noon Sunday, according to sheriff’s Cpl. Brenda Sipley.

An 18-year-old man driving a newly purchased 1990 Volvo 240 pulled away from the curb and the motorcycle struck the car, Sipley said.

The rider was thrown into the roadway and skidded about a dozen feet on the right side of his helmet before stopping face down about 50 feet from the point of impact, Sipley said.

Sipley said the rider was taken to a hospital and was under the care of a trauma surgeon for multiple broken ribs and lacerations to his internal organs.

Alcohol was not suspected in the crash, she said.
