Caretaker accused of pushing elderly woman to be in court

VISTA (KUSI) — A caretaker accused of abusing a 94-year-old North County woman over three months ago is expected to be in court Monday.

Margaret Wood, 94, was visiting a friend at a home on Topaz Lane when 66-year-old William Forest Sutton, the friend’s live-in caregiver, allegedly pushed her out a kitchen door onto a concrete patio, leaving her with serious injuries.

Sutton fled before officers arrived but was arrested the following day and booked on suspicion of attempted murder and felony elder abuse, Oceanside police spokesman Ryan Keim said.

Following the alleged assault, Wood suffered serious head injuries and remained in hospice care in deteriorating condition. She died July 9.

Sutton was being held on $2 million bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Tuesday morning. He faces attempted murder chargers and willful cruelty to an elderly adult. If convicted, Sutton could face up to 14 years in prison.

Authorities have not disclosed a suspected motive for the attack.
