Carjacking suspect arrested following mall-to-mall car chase

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – A carjacking suspect led deputies on a chase Wednesday from one mall in the Oak Park area to another in the South Bay, where he pulled over and ran into a movie theater in a failed attempt to evade arrest.

The chase began about 10:40 a.m., after patrol personnel spotted a stolen silver Toyota sedan outside a Target Store at Marketplace at the Grove shopping center in San Diego, according to sheriff’s officials.

The suspect sped off, entering nearby state Route 94 and then exiting at Federal Boulevard, where the pursuing deputies lost him, Lt. Rich Williams said.

Shortly after 11 a.m., a sheriff’s helicopter crew spotted the stolen vehicle on 59th Street and followed it to Westfield Plaza Bonita, where the driver stopped, jumped out and went into an AMC movie house.

Deputies got to the mall minutes later, found the suspect and arrested him. His name was not immediately available, and it was unclear when the carjacking took place.
