Carlsbad 28, Rancho Bernardo 7

Before the game it looked as though the Rancho Bernardo Broncos would get the better of the Carlsbad Lancers. In the end, the Lancers pulled this game out of the bag beating the Rancho Bernardo Broncos, 28-7, earning a much needed win away from home.

After last week’s loss to La Costa Canyon, the Broncos were looking to bounce back with a win at home. The game started out well for them as they scored on the first play of the game. Tyree Range stormed through the Lancers’ defense for a 65-yard touchdown run, putting his team in the driver’s seat right from the get go. Then, the unexpected happened. The Lancers turned the game on its head, as Jackson Whitteker threw a screamer to Kellen Peet for a 38-yard TD.

Midway through the 2nd quarter, tied at seven, Carlsbad on 3rd and 24 when suddenly Whitteker found Peet again for a 34-yard gain, huge 1st down. On came the onslaught when two plays later, Lancers’ star of the game, Dylan Rutledge ran the ball six yards for his 1st TD. A few minutes later Cameron Chapman ran the ball into the end zone to put the Lancer’s up 21-7 at the half.

After the break, the final quarter quickly rolled in after a monotonous 3rd quarter for both teams. The Broncos could not find their form, succumbing to frustration after a spectacular Lancers’ defensive display. Midway through the 4th quarter, Dylan Rutledge put the icing on the cake for his team when he ran the ball for a 7-yard TD; Lancers 28-7 Broncos.

The Lancers will look to find their stride after gaining a much needed win away from home. Their defense showed huge character, freezing up the Bronco’s offensive plays and forcing Tyree Range out of the game completely. As for the Broncos, their offense looked lost out on the pitch today in an embarrassing display at home. The defeat handed the Broncos their first loss at home this season. They will look to get back to winning ways again next week, away to San Pasqual.
