Cate sworn in as City Councilmember
SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – On Wednesday, Mayor Kevin Faulconer introduced all nine Council members with Todd Gloria, Lorie Zapf and David Alvarez getting the loudest reception.
Then he welcomed the new Republican member, Chris Cate, whose election is notable because it preserves the mayor’s veto power.
“Chris I want to say thank you for all of the hard work that you’ve done. As you know Chris was a former member of my staff so I know first hand his dedication and the tireless work he’s gonna do. On behalf of all the city of San Diego and particularly the council district, Chris congratulations,” said the mayor.
Lorie Zapf was sworn in for District 2.
Myrtle Cole in District 4, became the first full-term African-American female on the Council.
David Alvarez in District 8, took the oath administered by Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins.
Chris Cate in District 6.
Cate spoke in Filipino as an acknowledgement to the Asian, and Pacific Islander community who sent him to Council.
“Yes we have our moments of trials and tribulation, but I see these as opportunities, not challenges and know that I am here just as you are to improve the quality of life for all residents in America’s finest city,” said Cate.
All members pledged to work together to move the city forward.
