Cathedral Catholic 27, Torrey Pines 0

The first round of Open Division playoffs did not disappoint, to say the least. On Friday, the Torrey Pines Falcons traveled 2 miles up Del Mar Heights Rd to face their cross town rivals, the Cathedral Catholic Dons. Coming into the game Torrey was ranked seventh and Cathedral second, the two played each other in Week 3 of the regular season in which the Dons were victorious, 8-7.

On the first play from scrimmage, Tyson Maeva intercepted the Falcons and returned it 19 yards. This set up a Clayton Dale 1 yard QB keeper for the score. Dons were up 7-0 within a minute and a half from the start of the game. Falcons had a quick three and out on the following series.

For the rest of the 10 minutes Dons were unable to get back in the end zone, but settled for field goals instead, rounding out the first quarter with Cathedral Catholic leading 13-0.

Late in the second quarter, Dale found Courtney Richardson in the end zone for a 26 yard touchdown pass ending the half with Dons ahead 20-0.

The Falcons found a bright spot in the third quarter as Harrison Cohen was able to intercept Dale; however, Torrey Pines was unable to score off of the turnover. Towards the end of the fourth quarter, Dons sealed the deal with a short 2 yard touchdown run by Adam Eastwood to close out the game with a Cathedral Catholic win, 27-0.

Despite how substantial the score was, the game was very sloppy and the tension overcame many players. Flags were flying after nearly every play with many of the calls being questionable. In the first quarter, Torrey’s Mason O’Rosky threw Dons’ Eastwood to the ground well after Eastwood’s helmet had fallen off and the whistle had blown. The refs did not call a personal foul on the Falcons, but rather a chop block on Cathedral Catholic committed earlier in the play.

Most notable, starting running back for the Dons, Hogan Irwin, was penalized for kicking a Torrey Pines’ player while he was down. This led to Irwin’s ejection from the game and automatic suspension, the length of the suspension will be determined by the referees. Unfortunately for the Dons, this means they will be losing Irwin as they face the third ranked Helix Highlanders next week.
