CEO Joe Harper talks changes at the Del Mar Racetrack

Another horse was seriously injured at the Del Mar Racetrack during Thursday’s Feature 7th: 4-year-old filly Serious, trained by Vince Smith, pulled up with what the Del Mar vet Dana Stead thought was a fatal injury. The horse’s owner sought a second opinion and had the filly shipped to Los Alamitos.

Two days into the meet and seven horses have been euthanized – four from accidents on the turf course, which prompted CEO Joe Harper to close the grass track for a second time this meet.

Del Mar President and CEO Joe Harper joins KUSI’s Sports Director Paul Rudy to discuss the incident as well as his opinion on whether or not he thinks there is a problem with the turf.

“As I understand it, the (injured) horse is up and it’s in Los Alamitos. The vets are checking it and deciding whether or not to operate on the horse. So, we wish him the best.”

“We’ve done everything really that we can to this racetrack.”
