Challenges of defining a ‘natural born citizen’

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – A new twist in the Republican race for the White House, Donald Trump is questioning whether Ted Cruz can run at all because he was born in Canada.

Cruz’s mother, though, was a U.S. citizen.

Ted Cruz did hold duel citizenship but renounced his Canadian citizenship before launching his presidential campaign.

This Ted Cruz issue is shedding light on the complicated task of defining what is means to be a "natural born citizen."

Immigration Law Attorney and Adjunct Professor from the California School of Law, Yvette Lopez-Cooper, sat down with KUSI to discuss this issue further.
