Chargers Training Camp: Military Appreciation Day
The San Diego Chargers are hard at work preparing for the upcoming season at training camp. Tuesday, Chargers Park welcomed special guests from downtown, the US Marine Corps. Marines and Charger players were able to interact on the practice field, while the athletes signed autographs for each of the military officers.
"Both of my grandparents were in the Army, so I come from a military family. It’s the least we can do for them to thank them for what they do," says Chargers nose tackle Sean Lissemore.
While the Marines were excited to meet the players, all members of the Chargers organization were just as thrilled to meet the country’s heros.
"We’re so fortunate to do what we do and live the lives that we do and to play the world’s greatest game and these people make the sacrifices they do to make that happen for us," says head coach Mike McCoy. The strong military presence in San Diego allows for the community, the professional sports teams and the military officers to form relationships that they otherwise might not have in other cities.
The Chargers have a special circumstance this year, with Naval Officer Chris Swain out of the Naval Academy joining the 2016 training camp roster. He will split duty between playing football for the Bolts and serving on North Shore Coronado. But as Chris has stated before, service has to come first. "I understand more of what they do for this country because I recently became a reserve. You can never thank the service men and women enough for what they do, and it’s really special to have them out here."
