Chick-Fil-A Game of the Week: Torrey Pines Falcons 32, Oceanside Pirates 28

The Chick-Fil-A Game of the Week in Week 8 of the KUSI Prep Pigskin Report brought us one exciting game that turned into the PPR upset of the night. The Torrey Pines Falcons beat the Oceanside Pirates 32-28.

The stands were packed for the Pirate’s 110 season at Oceanside. The Pirates celebrated their homecoming game, but fell short to bring home the win.

The first quarter was slow and remained scoreless until the second quarter of the game. The Falcons were the first team to throw some points on the board. Nick Nasland ran for a 9-yard touchdown. The point after touchdown was no good which brought the score 6-0. Oceanside answered right back with Max Shuffer throwing a 31-yard touchdown pass to Kyrin Beachem. The Pirates took the lead 7-6.

Torrey Pines quickly turned the ball around and answered with a 23-yard touchdown run by Nick Nasland. The Falcons played hard defense and were able to get the ball back one more time before the end of the half. The Falcons kicked a 23-yard field goal by Nino Alworth ending the first half with Torrey Pines in the lead 16-7.

The second half is where all the excitement and actions took place. In the third quarter, Oceanside was down by nine, Max Shuffer pitched to Josh Bernard for a 76-yard touchdown pass to Julian Hicks. The Pirates only down by 2 at this point. Oceanside would not end the game without putting up a fight. Shuffer threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Garcia to take the lead 28-23.

Torrey Pines came out with a winning mentality and that is what they showed us tonight. Andrew Meiers intercepted Shuffer’s pass for a 38-yard return to the 2-yard line to set up Nino Alworth for a 28-yard field goal. Torrey Pines quickly got the ball back and Sully Obrien scored a 5-yard touchdown run to put the Falcons right back in the lead 32-28. The Falcons weren’t done yet.

Oceanside’s Max Shuffer fumbled the ball that was recovered by Yujay Kurosu to bring the game to an end. The Torrey Pines Falcons took home the win and the KUSI’s Prep Pigskin Report upset of the night.

Both teams demonstrated a strong defense and a motivated offense but the Falcons came out strong and took home the win. Torrey Pines will have a home conference game vs. Carlsbad next Friday and Oceanside will travel to Escondido to take on San Pasqual.
