Chris Swain: Chargers Rookie and US Naval Officer
NFL rookies reported to their respective mini camps on Friday, and while professional athletes are considered heroes, undrafted free agent Chris Swain gives the term a stronger meaning. Swain, a recent graduate of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, is awaiting his placement at a naval base. Receiving a call from the San Diego Chargers may have helped relocate him to one of the largest navy cities in the U.S.
"There’s a huge naval presence in San Diego which is awesome for me because service comes first." The fullback of Navy rushing for over 2,000 career yards is unsure how the process will work, serving both in the navy and as an NFL fullback. He must wait to hear from the Secretary of Defense on the ruling.
Chargers head coach Mike McCoy is proud to have Chris on the squad. "We are very honored to have Chris here, and what he does and what he has done to this point in time in his life, and the commitment he has made to this country, speaks for itself."
Swain has visited San Diego during naval training. He was excited to learn about the Padres Military Sundays, and the Silver Pigskin Gala aboard the U.S.S. Midway. "That would be awesome, I would love to come to that! We actually had a dinner there when I was here for the bowl game (Poinsettia Bowl) in San Diego. Just being here as a Charger now is different, and it’s pretty cool."
