Chula Vista 36, Hilltop 27

The 13th Annual Kiwanis Trophy was handed to the Chula Vista for the tenth time in series history as the Spartans scored the last 22 points to beat the Hilltop Lancers 36-27.

The score was 14-14 at the half when KUSI made it to Hilltop.

The Spartans second half opening drive was halted by a beautiful read by corner Emilio Ugarte to pick off Mario Cabada deep over the middle.

On the ensuing drive, Lancer Quarterback Senior Daniel Sanchez faked the pass and scrambled down the right side for a 37-yard touchdown.

After a successful pooch kickoff recovery, Hilltop drives down and scores again on a 5-yard touchdown by Angel Pineda to take a 27-14 lead.

Chula Vista responded quickly as Running Back Jaylon Candler split the defense to take it 52 yards for a touchdown cutting the deficit 27-21.

The Spartans regained the lead 28-27 as Quarterback Mario Cabada found Tight End Andrew Raffe on a 10-yard touchdown connection.

The Spartans never looked back as they tacked on a touchdown at the end for Coach Drew Westling‘s first win ever as a head coach of any program.
