Chula Vista Human Relations Commission votes on keeping or removing statue of Christopher Columbus

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Thursday evening, Union del Barrio San Diego led a protest at the Chula Vista Human Relations Commission meeting, where the panel is scheduled to vote on whether to remove a statue of Christopher Columbus from Discovery Park and then rename the park with Kumeyaay tribal guidance.

The Christopher Columbus statue has been featured in Chula Vista’s Discovery Park for thirty years.

Now, local Native American groups say they are offended by the statue, and it has been vandalized many times over the years.

KUSI’s Dan Plante was live at Discovery Park gathering all the details and speaking with some of the people who want the statue gone ahead of Thursday’s vote.
