Chula Vista SWAT stand-off
CHULA VISTA (CNS) – A man who claimed he had murdered his wife at their Chula Vista home and planned to kill himself was in a standoff with a SWAT team Thursday afternoon, a police lieutenant said.
The man called 911 about 3 p.m. and said he was in his house in the 2500 block of Garnet Peak Road, along with his slain spouse's body, Lt. Fritz Reber said.
Officers closed a stretch of the street, and administrators at nearby Arroyo Vista Elementary School directed teachers to keep their students secured in their classrooms as a precaution.
A special weapons and tactics team took up positions around the residence while officers tried to contact the apparently distraught resident and persuade him to surrender peacefully, police spokesman Bernard Gonzales said.
The school lockdown was lifted after a “short time,” according to Gonzales. Students were then released to their parents.
The barricade situation continued late this afternoon.
