CIF Division IV Championship: Mater Dei Crusaders 49, Bishop Knights 14

The Week 15 one of two South Bay Playoff Games of the Week features Mater Dei (11-1) taking on Bishop’s (8-4). In the end the Mater Dei Crusaders end up victorious by a score of 49-14….they are the Division 4 champs!

This is a game with several themes. Firstly…it’s a complete repeat of last year’s contest which was won by Bishop’s. You can bet Mater Dei is looking for revenge. The game featured a controversial hit by Bishop’s star player Bulla Graft on Connor Finnestad…a hit the Mater Dei players remember well.

The other theme is a battle between two teams where the juniors and sophomores are the stars of the show!

Speaking of which…Mater Dei junior Eli Shelton takes the opening kick-off 87 yards for a score . Minutes later junior quarterback Chris Jones with the quarterback sneak to make it 14-0 Crusaders. Then Jones with an 80-yard touchdown pass to Eli Shelton.

With less than two minutes to go in the first quarter, junior running back CJ Verdell makes it 28-0 Crusaders with a thirty-yard touchdown run.

In the second quarter Chris Jones hooks up with Eli Shelton for a 50-yard touchdown pass.

With one minute to go in the half Bishop’s gets on the board with. pass from Mozes Mooney to Jacob Jackson.

Third quarter, Eli Shelton takes in his third touchdown pass of the game from Chris Jones. Then minutes later CJ Verdell with the one-handed   catch and great run into the end zone.

With so many talented juniors, it’s not hard to speculate how good Mater Dei is going to be next year!

Thanks for watching!
