CIF Division V Championship: Coronado 21, Crawford 7

This years San Diego Section CIF Division V Championship game saw the Coronado Islanders defeat the Crawford Colts 21-7 to claim their first section title since 1986 and their fourth title overall.

The win brings Coronado’s record on the year to 9-4 and give coach Tony Isabella his first championship at the school.

The story of this game was Christopher Haas and the Islanders ground game. As a team the Islanders ran for 217 yards, Haas contributed 159 of those yards and all three Islander touchdowns. Those three touchdowns brings Haas’s total on the year to 25 scores.

Coronado’s defensive came up big as well. They held Crawford, a team that had been averaging over 30 points a game, to just one score. Senior linebackers Gregg Gonzalez and Ian Thorleifson played huge roles in the game. Gonzalez finished the game with 12 total tackles including a sack and Thorleifson added 4 tackles and an interception.

As for Crawford, they finish their season with a 10-3 record, including a 5-0 league record that earned them the Manzanita league title for the second time in three seasons.

Coronado will live to play another game. On December, 11 they will host the undefeated Belmont Sentinels who won the CIF Los Angeles City Section Division III championship. The winner of that game will earn a stop in the Division VI-AA State Championship game.
