City Attorney Mara Elliott receives endorsement from Planned Parenthood in re-election bid

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – City Attorney Mara Elliott announced Thursday she has been endorsed by the Planned Parenthood Action Fund of the Pacific Southwest in her 2020 re-election bid.

The Planned Parenthood Action Fund is the organization’s political advocacy group, supporting access to sexual health care and defending against challenges to reproductive health. Darrah Jonson, the group’s president and CEO in the Pacific Southwest, called Elliott a champion for women, families and personal choice in San Diego.

“She’s stood with Planned Parenthood against attacks on reproductive health, stepped up to support survivors of domestic violence, and fought to ensure San Diego women can safely access the care they need,” Jonson said. “Planned Parenthood Action Fund of the Pacific Southwest is proud to endorse Mara Elliott for city attorney.”

Until recently, Elliott had been running unopposed for a second term as city attorney. However, on Tuesday, local attorney Cory Briggs formally filed his intent to run for city attorney, according to the city’s financial disclosure website.

Briggs had previously been running for mayor of San Diego but confirmed to the San Diego Reader last week that he was ending those plans, saying the campaign reminded him “how much better I am at practicing law than politics.” Briggs is involved in multiple ongoing lawsuits against the city and would likely be required to recuse himself should he upset Elliott in the race.

Despite the previous lack of competition, Elliott has received endorsements from local legal and law enforcement organizations, including the San Diego Police Officers Association, the San Diego Deputy City Attorneys Association and the La Raza Lawyers Association.

Elliott was elected to the position in 2016 with 57.3% of the vote.

“It’s an honor to stand with Planned Parenthood,” Elliott said. “Here in San Diego we’re fighting to protect and expand women’s access to healthcare and I’ll continue to do everything in my power to oppose any and all efforts to interfere with women’s rights.”
