City Council proclaims “Earth Week” in SD

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – The City Council Tuesday proclaimed it “Earth Week” in the city of San Diego.

The proclamation was presented by City Council President Todd Gloria and Councilman Ed Harris to honor the 45th anniversary of Earth Day and the annual Earth Fair in Balboa Park to be held Sunday.

Gloria said the council is involved in several environmental initiatives, including a proposal to ban single-use plastic shopping bags, developing a plan to respond to climate change, adding solar power panels to city buildings and promoting the use of recycled water.

“So let the word go out that this council is focused on preserving our environment, and we’re here today with stakeholders helping to make that happen, to make sure that San Diego, America’s finest city, is recognized as a leader in environmental policy, sustainability and the fight against global climate change,” Gloria said.

Hundreds of businesses, nonprofit organizations and government agencies are set to take part in the 25th annual Earth Fair, sharing environmentally friendly products, services and policies. The event generally draws 60,000 people to Balboa Park.

On Saturday, I Love a Clean San Diego will hold its annual countywide Creek to Bay Cleanup, in which volunteers will rid more than 90 sites of refuse. The locations include beaches, inland waterways and parks.
