City Councilman David Alvarez endorses Antonio Villaraigosa for governor

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — City Councilman David Alvarez Monday endorsed Antonio Villaraigosa for governor during a tour of a local coffee roasting company.

Alvarez cited the campaign’s focus on increasing economic opportunity by supporting the growth of small business, and Villaraigosa’s overall record as the reasons for his endorsement of the former Los Angeles mayor.

“I’m proud to endorse Antonio Villaraigosa for governor because he cares about creating jobs and economic opportunity for all Californians,” Alavrez said. “Antonio knows that when you support small businesses you support jobs in our community.”

Villaraigosa, a Democrat who also served as state Assembly speaker, said he would focus on pushing for state policies that lessen obstacles faced by small businesses in order to support their growth and hire more high-wage workers.

Alvarez, a Democrat whose district includes San Ysidro, Otay Mesa and Barrio Logan, joined Villaraigosa on a tour of Ryan Bros. Coffee in Barrio Logan on Monday morning.

Villaraigosa, who was mayor of L.A. from 2005-13, is running in a field that includes state Treasurer John Chiang, former state schools chief Delaine Eastin, and Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom.
