City Game of the Week: El Capitan 35, Madison 7

Coming off a horrifying loss in the CIF quarterfinals and the loss of several seniors, maybe the Madison faithful should have expected what would happen in their home opener against El Capitan.

But no prognosticator could have seen the demolishing about to erupt in the middle of Clairemont Mesa.

Riding the arm and legs of senior quarterback Brad Cagle, the Vaqueros lit up the Warhawks 35 to 7 in a Week 1 matchup that got out of control in the second half.

“It’s huge,” Cagle said. “We came out fired up. We knew from the beginning we had them.”

While Cagle has earned plenty of attention for his arm, it was his legs that made it happen early on. After a muffed punt deep in Madison territory, Cagle’s two yard scamper opened up the scoring. But the response came from Coles the way most were expecting – a dancing samba into the end zone.

“Our defense mainly gameplanned on stopping their read option and stopping Kareem Coles,” Cagle said. “He’s a great player. But out defense stepped up big today.”

That step up in the second quarter included a bevy of sacks on Coles, from the likes of Clay Cromwell, James Owen and Joey Lachappa.
