Jersey Mike’s City Game of the Week: University City Centurions 41, Valhalla Norsemen 14

The University City Centurions defended their house this past friday night. The sandwich battle against the Valhalla Norsemen was hard fought with an extra side of touchdown passes.

The final in this non-league matchup: 41 to 14 Centurions.

For the Norseman, a straight-away dash to the end zone for Kiare Worthy on a kickoff return went for 95 yards.

The Valhalla Norseman produced well on the rushing aspect of their attack with dual threat running backs, Kegan Baker and Elijahwan Phillips. Expect for them to be ready after a great week of practice in week 2.

The Centurions got off to a fast start, to who else but No. 2 Casey Granfors receiving a short pass from Gunnar Gray on a nice out route with a reverse pivot to the sideline from 48 yards out.

Gray was spreading the wealth via the air tonight, recording seven variations of reservations for six in this game. Two TDs to his RB E’Lonie Rico showing chemistry out of the backfield.

Tariq Jefferson showed flashes all night as well. The UC offense did very well, first week things happen. It should be interesting now how they prepare next week of practice for another opportunity to play a playoff team.

PREVIEW: The wait seems to get longer every single year, but the CIF high school football season is finally back!

This season’s very first Jersey Mike’s City Game of the Week features the University City Centurions and Valhalla Norseman, two teams with two very different results last year. Fortunately, a new year means a clean slate and both teams know that anything can happen.

The University City Centurions had one of the more successful football teams in the San Diego County last year, ending the regular season at 9-1 while claiming the number one seed in the Division 4 playoffs. Despite a heartbreaking semi-finals loss to the eventual champions Monte Vista, University City ended their year with a belief they can be the best and hunger to prove it. The Centurions’ biggest weapon is returning quarterback Gunnar Gray. While most sophomores are either playing on the JV team or learning the ropes from their upperclassmen, Gray threw for 2,750 yards and 31 touchdowns. With even more pressure in 2018, this season will heavily impact his future in football. The Centurions also bring back E’Lonie Rico, one half of a dynamic running back duo that rushed for a combined 2,254 yards and scored 34 times. His partner Marcel Patterson may have graduated, but Rico now has the opportunity to become one of the best in the CIF.

The Valhalla Norseman are rebuilding after a rough 2017. The Norseman started strong at 2-2 but ended up losing every game after that, finishing with a tough 2-9 record. Struggling to put points on the board was the biggest factor in the team’s losing streak. If they want to start strong again but keep the momentum going throughout the year they’ll need to fix this. It will be tough with the loss of running back Connor Buckley, but not impossible. Senior wide receiver Kiare Worthy showed a lot of promise his junior season and could be the breakout player that this team needs.

Week one of football is finally here, and the only guarantee is it will be exciting! Tune into the Prep Pigskin Report this Friday to catch the highlights from this game and many more.
