City Game of the Week: Pt. Loma 47, Mt. Miguel 35
Week 12 of the KUSI Prep Pigskin Report’s “City Game of the Week” featured a CIF San Diego Section Playoff Division 1 Round 1 game. The Western League Point Loma Pointers (8-2) hosted the Grossmont-Hills League Mount Miguel Matadors (3-7) at the Old Balboa stadium downtown San Diego. Both teams came in fired up to play with winner advancing to the next round of quarterfinals!
Point Loma went into last week as the potential #1 seed in the Division 1 bracket. They suffered a tough loss to the Madison Warhawks in the Western League Championship. The selection committee punished the Pointers by giving them a 5 seed birth, forcing them to play in Round 1. It was obvious that Point Loma had a chip on their shoulder, and came out with tenacious intensity from the first play. The Mt. Miguel Matadors record does not reflect the quality of team they are coming out of a tough Grossmont-Hills League. They were not going to lay down easy and looked sharp from kickoff.
In the first quarter both teams played excellent football, putting together multiple successful scoring drives. Point Loma blocked a punt deep in Matador territory and recovered. Pointer running back “Slash” Jaylen Griffen followed his excellent offensive line, for an easy un-touched 8 yard touchdown. The Matadors responded a perfectly thrown 26 yard touchdown pass from quarterback #3 Jacob Castillo to wide receiver #24 Gary Haskins. Point Loma put together another efficient drive by looking to quarterback #5 Gavin Grady to put the ball in the air. He connected with tight end #80 Tim O’Brien for a 37 yard pass, to set up a 5 yard touchdown run by running back #6 “Pinball” Romeo Epperly. Matadors quarterback Castillo tied it up with another 32 yard air strike to wide receiver #23 Anthony Gilmore. At the end of the 1st quarter the game was tied up 14-14.
The momentum shifted Point Loma’s way in the second quarter! Gavin Grady was superb in throwing the ball downfield. He connected with O’Brien for another 38 yard seam throw down the middle of the field. Slash Griffen followed it up with a 15 yard touchdown on a reverse. Grady and O’Brien looked like Brady to Gronkowski! They hooked up again for a 41 yard touchdown connection. The Pointers powerful defense stuffed all of the Matadors drives in the second quarter. They put the nail in the coffin with 9 seconds left with a 42 yard touchdown connection between Grady and Griffen. Point Loma went into halftime up 33 – 14 on the Mt. Miguel Matadors.
Point Loma went up 40 – 14 early in the 3rd quarter. “Pinball” Romeo Epperly connected with #7 Sergio Gallegos on the running back option, for a 27 yard touchdown. The Matadors did not give up and were able to put more points on the board in the second half. They unfortunately were too far behind and did not have enough time to even the score. The final score was Point Loma 47 and Mt. Miguel 35.
Point Loma’s offense was firing on all cylinders Friday night. They looked sharp and are hungry for a rematch against the Madison Warhawks. Round 2 of the Division 1 playoffs will feature a rematch of the Western League Championship! Madison Warhawks (7-3) will host the Point Loma Pointers (9-2) next Friday November 21st!
