Co-developer of the first successful coronary stent honored

SAN DEIGO (KUSI) – Dr. Richard Schatz has been honored with The Russ prize for his work as an early pioneer of coronary stent technology and the co-development of the first successful coronary stent, the Palmaz-Schatz stent.

The Russ prize was established in 2001 and is awarded every two years.

“Fritz Russ was a successful engineer from the early days in the 50’s and 60’s and built many successful engineering companies dedicated to the space industry and others. He endowed a fund to recognize excellence in bio engineering after realizing that the Nobel committee largely ignored engineers. So he created his own Nobel prize to give to those who created products that improved mankind and relieved suffering.”according to Dr. Schatz
