Committee asks for donations for Fort Rosecrans Memorial Day event

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — With only a few days left until the Fort Rosecrans Memorial Day event, the Fort Rosecrans Memorial Committee is in need of supplies.

The day of service will be held for the 116th time at the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery and to provide for attendees, the volunteer committee is asking for donations to support costs for the event including transportation and traffic control.

Jeffrey Simonides, Chairman of the Fort Rosecrans Memorial Day Committee said donations are important to help keep this important event going.

“Bring kids out to learn about the history and to partake—to know their freedom isn’t free. Someone sacrificed their life and sacrificed their careers for their freedom,” Simonides said.

The event will begin at 10 a.m. Monday and will honor fallen Navy Seal Chief Petty Officer Charles Keating IV, a Coronado-based seal killed in Iraq by ISIS gunfire last month. Former committee members Isabel “Izzy” Skidmore and WWII Army Veteran Glen Silvers will also be honored at the event.

Fort Rosecrans became an Army Post cemetery in the 1860s and was placed under the Veterans Administration National Cemetery System in 1973.
